Spain ceded the territory to the United States, and Filipino revolutionaries declared the First Philippine Republic. WebbDuring that period (1898-1914) the Philippines were provided with modern laws and regulations. A sanitary code, pure food and drug legislation, legislation governing the teaching and practice of medicine, dentistry, nursing and pharmacy were introduced and their effectiveness gradually extended throughout the Archipelago.
